Death Row at Eastern State

This is a photo of what became known as "Death Row" at Eastern State Penitentiary. Although no prisoners were ever executed at ESP, several DID lose their lives because of violent actions by malicious guards or fellow inmates.

Death Row got its name because the prisoners housed here were among the most violent and unpredictable. They were the worst of the worst and one prisoner who supposedly cut his wrists with his own sharpened fingernails was allowed to bleed to death because the guards didn't trust him enough to open the cell door to rescue him.
